Exempt Status: ExemptPosition Summary:As the Chief Financial Officer, you will report to the Chief Executive Officer and work closely with other senior staff to implement the financial and operational aspects of the Museum of Arts & Sciences ("MOAS") strategic vision. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker who proactively recognizes financial and operational efficiency needs, anticipates issues and opportunities, and recommends value-added solutions. Additionally, the ideal candidate will embrace financial technology and understand how to onboard and implement modern financial systems. Responsibilities will involve establishing and evolving MOAS's financial infrastructures and processes in support of building a more collaborative, impactful, and data-driven organization. The CFO will provide solutions to enable sustainable business practices, manage projects, and develop and implement new financial and operational processes. The CFO will manage and oversee two staff members and the Information Technology contract and will be a member of the Senior Leadership TeamIn addition to leading the financial organization, this role will also include some operational responsibilities that include:

  • Coordinating and contributing to development and execution of the overall strategy.
  • Implementing management processes and policies to ensure core operational functions are in place and working effectively to achieve business objectives and financial outcomes with specific focus on modernizing the finance department for a growing non-profit organization.
  • Working closely with the Development department to ensure proper reporting and analysis, stewardship, and governance.
  • Overseeing the technology organization, to ensure it is operational, resilient, and secure. Also collaborate with the operational team leaders regarding their proposed investments in technology to support the visitor experience.
  • Collaborating with the other operational leaders to assess overall business and operational capabilities and develop solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.Strategy and Leadership
    • Spearhead financial strategy and operations for an organization with an annual budget of $4-5 million.
    • Partner with leadership and other cross-functional team members to lead complex and/or large projects, ensure cross-collaboration and resourcing, and make recommendations to project trajectory as necessary. Proactively maintains existing relationships and develops new relationships with internal and external business partners and vendors.
    • Liaise with and/or manage advisors, vendors and partners (including museum partner relationships, accountants, consultants, and systems and technology service providers) and proactively coordinate with all to ensure that needs and objectives are delivered.
    • Deliver well thought-out financial analyses, modeling, projections and ad hoc analyses / projects / initiatives to all stakeholders and the Board of Directors.
    • Provide vision, direction, and leadership to the finance team. Build a high performing team that can support the growth of MOAS. Act as a player-coach, managing direct reports, as well as mentoring and coaching staff at various levels.Financial Reporting and Analytics
      • Contributes to the implementation of overall strategy and direction by:
      • analyzing business objectives and departmental needs of each vertical component of the business.
      • developing, communicating, building support for, and implementing business strategies, plans, and practices.

      • evaluating operational processes.
      • measuring outcomes to ensure desired results.
      • identifying and capitalizing on improvement opportunities.

      • Working in partnership with the CEO, lead the annual budget planning process, including development of an annual operating budget and implementation of key organization-wide strategic objectives.
      • Provide monthly operating budget-to-actual reports, with supporting explanatory narratives, help develop and manage spending forecasts; strategically interpret financial information and data to facilitate decision making.
      • Ensure properly functioning internal control environment over the receipt and disbursement of cash.
      • Oversee the annual audit.
      • Work in concert with the head of the Investment Committee regarding the museum's endowment.Systems Implementation
        • Research, identify, onboard, and lead the implementation, development and staff training of a new financial reporting system ensuring a successful integration with existing software systems to create robust, timely, and accurate reporting and analytics.
        • Work closely with Senior Team members and the technology team on the roll-out of new technology systems.
        • Identify and advocate for future software solutions that support growth, team accountability and visibility to the organization's numbers.Supervisory Responsibilities
          • Oversee and manage the Finance Department's two full time employees including an Accounts Manager and Finance & Operations Associate
          • Oversee and manage the Museum's Information Technology vendor contract and all related decisions and investments in technology.
          • Prepare for and attend monthly Board Finance Committee meetings.
          • Liaison with the Museum's investment partners.Requirements:
            • Bachelors or masters degree in accounting, or relevant field
            • 10+ years' experience in strategic planning, finance/budgeting, and operations
            • Extensive understanding of non-profit financial management and reporting
            • Significant experience in systems implementation
            • Understanding and ability to lead the vendor bidding process, selection, and management.
            • Experience creating business plans that identify the return on investment.
            • Experience working with capital projects.
            • Excellent project management skills and structured thinking skills
            • Proven ability to lead and develop teams.
            • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
            • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
            • Must embrace technology as a critical tool for success.
            • Knowledge of Financial Edge and Altru or demonstrated comfort with learning and utilizing software systems key to success in this position.Knowledge, skills and abilities:
              • Proven track record of enhancing financial performance, streamlining budget operations, and fostering organizational growth.
              • The ability to motivate the team, delegate effectively, and manage performance; viewed as a strong developer of others.

              • Experience building operational efficiencies through disciplined business analysis and metric driven accountability.
